The goal was to fade out the sharp edges of high-res images used in a planetarium show.
If we use feathered selection, radius of feathering is limited to 100, so this method is only suitable for smaller images. What I used was Layer Masks.
Creating gradients on transparency is as simple as right-click on layer, add
layer mask (then layer mask is automatically selected for editing) and
then drag a gradient FG to BG - ensure that FG is white and BG is black.

gradients - I created new layer "from visible", added a block of black
or background below that layer, and added the next gradient. Found that we can just Apply layer mask, then add layer mask again, and so on. Need not create new layers as in the screenshot below!
